Tianjin, with a population of 10 million people, is one of four largest cities in China and is directly under the control of the Central Government. Tianjin is located near Bohai Bay to the east of China’s Capital, Beijing. It is connected with Beijing by both a 120 km motor expressway and by express train service. Trains leave every hour and take approximate 75 minutes for the journey.

One of the most important industrial cities in North China, Tianjin had commercial business and trade with foreign countries in the early 19th century. It is also a domestic transportation hub that connects the north, the east and the northwest of China by land, sea and air. As one of the earliest cities in China to be opened to the outside world, Tiaqnjin has a more than 100 year history of prosperous industrial and commercial business ventures together with a thriving development in both education and public health.

Tianjin Medical University is conveniently located in the central area of Tianjin. Nearby are the prestigious Nankai University and Tianjin University. The attractively landscaped campus provides a pleasant environment. There is easy access to public transportation. Tianjin Medical University was the first institution for advanced medical education established since the foundation of the People’s Republic of China. Dr. Zhu Xianyi, famous in the area of endocrinology, was the first president. During the last 50 years the University has developed expertise in many aspects of medicine including nursing, pharmacology and medical laboratory science.

Tianjin Medical University was one of the first universities in China to be recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) and one of 74 universities in China to acquire the approval of the Ministry of Health to accept overseas students. Presently there are over 300 students from 25 countries enrolled in medical studies. On campus staff number approximately 1500 while medical staff in affiliated hospitals number 9265. There are 8322 full-time students and further 12000 students enrolled in continuing education programs. As one of the 97 universities specifically developed by the national “Project 211”, the university now boasts 10 colleges, 4 departments and 7 affiliated hospitals which altogether provide 4300 beds.

The Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council approved Tianjin Medical University to provide academic education leading to the baccalaureate, masters and doctorate degrees and also to provide a post-doctorate program. The University is therefor eligible to accept graduate students and trainees in the areas of medical science, in traditional Chinese medicine and in the integrated program known as Integration of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine (ITCMWM). Master’s degrees may be obtained in 43 disciplines and doctorate degrees in 24 disciplines. Post-doctorate programs are offered in clinical medicine and in ITCMWM.

The 7 year master’s program in clinical medicine and in dentistry (stomatology) at Tianjin Medical University is being expanded by increasing the number of students and simultaneously by raising the level of academic staff expertise. Lectures in English, French and Japanese are offered.

Presently, Tianjin Medical University has established academic relationship with 38 well known foreign universities. Through such international academic exchange our university is better able to meet the international standards of modern medical science. In the last 10 years our university has sponsored 24 international academic conferences in Tianjin.

Professor Hao Xishan, renowned in his specialty of oncology, is both President of Tianjin Medical University and Dean of the International College of ITCMWM. The honorary Dean is Professor Wu Xianzhong, an academician of the Chinese Engineering Academy and an expert in ITCMWM. With their leadership we will continue to take pride in our academic achievements particularly in the areas of oncology, ITCMWM, urinary surgery.
